Abstract:
Dental Implants in Diabetic Patients:
Risk Factors & Secrets of Success “
- Diabetes mellitus DM represent a common and increasing health problem with extensive harmful effects on various regions of the body including the oral cavity,. It has been described in some literature as a systemic para-inflammatic status (Nature 2017).
The most common oral manifestations of chronic uncontrolled DM are: accelerated periodontitis and dental loss, due to the micro vascular complications of DM.
- DM has been regarded as a relative risk factor for oral rehabilitation with implants, because of the negative effect of the disease on bone metabolism & strength, delayed wound healing, micro vascular complications, impaired response to infection.
- some studies indicated that the success rate of dental implants in diabetic patients were in range of 85.5-100% and were comparable to the non-diabetic patients. Most of the studies were of opinion that success rate in well/fairly controlled diabetics was either equal or insignificantly lower than normal individuals.
- some measures can improve success rate of dental implant in these patients like: good glycemic control ( preoperative and post-operative), prophylactic antibiotics, implant surface characteristics, implant length and width. another important factor is the experience of surgeons and good surgical process.
- This lecture, which will be delivered for the first time, will address the most important systematic reviews about dental implantation and diabetes, and will present clinical cases of dental implants performed for diabetic patients and the secrets of their success, by adopting the latest methods to help accelerating soft tissue healing, Osseointegration and postoperative pain relieve like LLLT, Ozone, medical plant extracts.
